The Oil to Finish Well

From “I’ll do it later” to “It is finished!”

“Finishing is better than starting. Patience is better than pride.” – Ecclesiastes 7:8 (NLT)

I had the plan.

I had the drive.

But the finish line felt like it was moving further away with every step.

I had enrolled in several courses to grow professionally; some self-paced, some structured. The self-paced ones… well, let’s just say they tested the limits of my-self 😏 10 months later, I was still crawling toward completion of the Project Management & Strategic Planning courses I had one-year access to.

This coincided with the 4-week course on Strategy Execution for Public Leadership.

The course was intense. Demanding. No room for procrastination.

Halfway through—Week #2—I got sick.

The kind of sick that makes you delirious and tempts you to quietly bow out and quietly, muttering, “I’ll pick it up later.”

But later often never comes. I had already invested time, money and sleepless nights into this.

So, I silenced the voices that said, “Are you sure you’re capable? Maybe you signed up for more than you can handle.”

I pushed through. Empowered by something familiar, something I experienced in my last year of university.

Some call it the Finisher’s Anointing: the grace to see a thing through to the end. It’s the supernatural grit, the strength to move beyond excuses, setbacks, and discomfort. The quiet determination that whispers, “This will not be another incomplete chapter.”

I completed the assignments. I attended the sessions. I crossed the finish line.

The truth is, for many of us, starting is exciting. The ribbon cutting ceremony is glorious. The applause for pioneering something new sparks hope.

But finishing?

Finishing is what changes you, it’s what sets you apart from countless others.

The grace to Finish isn’t about speed. It’s about endurance. It’s about trusting God’s timing and silencing the voice that says, “You can’t.”

If you’ve been stuck in a loop of half-done projects, maybe it’s time to ask God to pour fresh oil on your commitment.

Not just to start strong.

But to finish well.
